Everything Comes to the Surface, Eventually!

At Borambola Wines, we regularly have people dropping into our Cellar Door with stories behind their historical version of events from this amazing property. Whether it’s a family connection or just an interest of their own, we are constantly fascinated by the rich history that surrounds us.

So, when we recently received a call from Coral Druce at the Junee Licorice Factory asking if their friend, Jason, could come to Borambola with his metal detector and explore, our curiosity couldn’t say no! When Jason arrived, Tim McMullen offered up some of the good spots, suggesting behind some of the old sheds and in the paddocks to help him on his exploration around our property.

Four hours passed, and Jason returned with a handful of items, ranging from buttons to ceramic bottle tops, lipstick canisters and some silver items. But the jewel in the crown was quite impressive, a 1915 Floren coin complete with the robed and crowned bust of King George V on it.

King George the V sent his son King Edward VIII to Australia after WW1 to thank the Australian troops for their efforts. Travelling mainly on the east coast of Australia, he visited over 100 regional towns. During his travels, King Edward VIII came and spent three nights at Borambola Homestead. Hence, our Sparkling Brut is called VIII, and for those in the know, he abdicated from the throne to marry the twice-divorced American, Wallace Simpson.

So there you have it, an incredible old coin find from Jason’s metal detector just so happened to have a deep historical connection to the roots of the home of our wines.
